My Mob
My Mob is a memoir by Phyllis Taylor nee Hill, a Yirandali, Ngawun Chinese woman, about her parents Albert and Fanny Hill both Aboriginal Chinese born in the mid to late 1800s, their children, descendants, extended family and connections.
The family lived in North West Queensland Australia through the times of colonial settlement, 'the Act', Removal Orders, Assimilation, Stolen Generations and Stolen Wages.
The search for her father's Chinese fathers ancestral village in China and discovery of a lineage back to the Han dynasty of ancient China.
My Mob celebrates the achievements of Albert and Fanny's descendants who have successfully contributed to Australian society in the arts, community service, education, defence, health, law, pastoral and mining industry, public service and sports.

I want present and future generations to read my story and know that our mob lived through an appalling, oppressive and cruel time under British colonists and we survived.
When we yarn about our family history we are continuing the story telling traditions of our people and we are keeping the memory of our ancestors alive. I also like to think that we are also paying respect to those who struggled before us.
This is why it is so important to walk in the footsteps of your Aboriginal family and let their stories become yours and your children's as your kids need to learn about and understand the struggles of their old people.
As time goes by the generations to come will have no idea what it was like back in the day, and I can assure you it was a hard life!
We didn't have much but we had our kinship and that was all that mattered.

To the reader,

Thank you for holding these pages in your hands. This memoir is more than a collection of memories, it is a life lived with courage, grit, humour, and love.
Within these stories are the quiet sacrifices, the hard-earned lessons, the laughter around kitchen tables, and the strength that carried a family through changing times.

Phyllis didn't just witness history, she built a life inside it. Every chapter holds pieces of resilience, devotion, stubborn hope, and the kind of love that shows up every single day.
As you read, may you find echoes of your own family.

May her stories remind you to cherish the ordinary moments, to hold your people close, and to remember that even the smallest life moments can ripple across generations.
These pages are a legacy.
A reminder.
A thank you.
With love and gratitude.
